How to Remove Jeep Fender Flares

The Jeep Wrangler has been manufactured with ABS plastic fender flares since 1986. These fender flares can be removed for cleaning or repair. The average backyard mechanic will spend about an hour removing all four flares.

Instructions

1. Unscrew and remove the turn signal lamps and reflectors on the front flares. This takes a 10mm socket, and complete removal of the turn signal is optional. The fender can still be removed with just the bulb housing uncoupled from the turn signal. Rear flares will not have signal lamps.

2. Unbolt the 8mm screws that hold the fender flares to the Jeep body. They are held in place with flat "nut-squares," and these can fall out or twist with the bolt. It may be necessary to drive the bolt at an angle, as it puts pressure on the nut-squares.

3. Uncouple the fender flare from the Jeep. With time, dirt can collect into the crevices between the fender and the fender flare, so some effort may be required to pull the unit free.

How to Remove a Bestops From a 1997 Jeep Wrangler

If the top of your 1997 Jeep Wrangler was damaged and needs for a replacement, or if you want to install a new top on your vehicle, then you will need to remove the Bestops completely from the Jeep. This will take at least an hour to do.

Instructions

1. Peel back the fabric on the top, where the windshield meets the top, to reveal the front edge of the frame of the top. Peel back the fabric around the door opening on the vertical part of the top. Lift up around the edge of the top, just below the windows, to pull out the top from the belt rail. Peel out the top from the lip around the tailgate as well.

2. Open the door. Remove the pins from the rear bow attachment to the main roof cage using your hands. Unzip and remove the windows. Pull up the corners of the top, just above the taillights, to release the entire perimeter of the top from the back half of the Jeep.

3. Unsnap the top from the inside support bars by hand. Peel back the front of the top from the windshield retainer at the top of the windshield. Unbolt the brackets from the sides of the Jeep top using an open-end wrench, Phillips-head screwdriver and a Torx-head driver. Pull apart the bows and brackets from the top and pull off the Bestop as an assembly.

How to Install Bushwacker Fender Flares

Bushwacker fender flares are made of a durable, flexible plastic material. These fender flares come in a factory black color that matches the trim on most vehicles, but they can be painted any color to match a specific vehicle. Bushwacker Fender Flares use two methods of installation -- double sided tape and self-tapping screws -- so they are sure to last as long as you want them on your vehicle.

Instructions:

1. Use a rag and rubbing alcohol to wipe the area along the fenders where the Bushwacker fender flares will be installed. Remove all mud, dirt and/or other debris where you will install the fenders. The alcohol removes the debris and evaporates quickly, leaving a clean, dry surface for the flares.

2. Apply the double sided tape that came with the fender flares to the inside edges of the flares. The tape length should fit exactly with the fender flares. Smooth the tape so that it adheres well to the flares with no wrinkles or bumps. Pull the plastic off the exposed side of the tape and place it on the very edge of the fender, just above the wheels. The flares are made to fit and follow a variety of vehicle shapes and body lines. Press the flare against the fender to make sure it is fully attached.

3. Place the new bolts for the Bushwacker flares through the holes where the previous fender flares were on your vehicle. If you had no existing fender flares, use the self-tapping screws that came with the Bushwacker flares. Place them in the holes through the flares, and screw them through the metal fender with a drill. No nuts are needed on the backside of self-tapping screws.

Tips:

If you want to paint your Bushwacker fender flares to match your vehicle, it's best to paint them before installing them.

How to Install a Bushwacker on a Jeep Cherokee

A Bushwacker is a brand of fender flare that you can install onto your Jeep Cherokee to provide added protection to the body of your vehicle. A Bushwacker -- or any Fender Flares -- is especially important if you are going to being doing activities such as off-roading, which will kick lots of dirt and water up onto the body of your vehicle. The installation process involves cutting exterior pieces of your vehicle. Make sure you are comfortable performing these modifications before beginning.

Adding a Bushwacker to your Jeep Cherokee minimizes damage to the body when driving off-road.

Instructions

1. Remove the 7mm nut right behind the front tire of the front factory flare.
2. Remove the 10mm nut inside the fender well of the tire.
3. Remove both 10mm nuts on both sides under the bumper.
4. Remove the front factory flare by pulling it down and away from the body.
5. Use adhesive remover and a putty knife to remove the "Cherokee Pioneer" emblem on the front left panel of your vehicle.
6. Start from the bottom of the front headlight and measure a horizontal line toward the fender. Mark the line at 5 inches from the front headlight and then draw a line from that mark upward to the third factory hole from the front of the fender.
7. Mark a line from the door seam toward the rear part of the fender. Measure in 5 ¼ inches from the door seam and make a mark. Draw a line from this mark to the third factory hole from the rear of the fender.
8. Mark a line from the third factory hole from the front to the third factor hole from the rear.
9. Use a reciprocating saw to cut out the bottom part of the fender along the three lines that you made in the last three steps.
10. Locate the sheet metal strut attached to the fender. Cut it with the saw.
11. Use the piece of sheet metal from the exterior of the fender that you just cut as a template and mark the inner sheet metal toward the rear of the front fender so that you can cut it in the next step. On a Jeep, the wheel well that you see on the outside is mirrored on the inside which is why you are using the template to mark the inner wheel well for the next cut. This will ensure uniformity.
12. Cut away the part of the inner sheet of the fender that you marked in the previous step.
13. Trim away your black plastic splash guard that was exposed by cutting the fender so that you can't see the overhanging plastic. Your wheel well was initially in the shape of an arc, what you did in the previous steps was widen the legs of the arc. When you widened the arc, you exposed more of the interior black plastic splash guard. Trimming the splash guard keeps it from being visible when you install the new fender flare.
14. Mark a line from the front bottom part of your cut fender to the grommet inside the front part of your wheel.
15. Cut along the line you made in the previous step and fold the flap in the splash guard in and under the front bumper. It is not advised to cut this piece of splash guard, as folding it in keeps the front of the wheel well from being exposed to the elements.

Attach the New Fender/Bushwacker

1. Place your new front flare onto the fender and mark all of the holes.
2. Drill the holes you marked in the previous step. You will use a 3/16-inch drill bit.
3. Attach your fender with the Torx screws provided. Be sure to put a rubber spacer between the fender and the body on each screw.
4. Repeat these steps for all four of your wheels.

How to Install a Bestop

Bestops makes a type of vehicle roof for Jeeps. This hard roof protects you from rain and snow. Since a Bestop uses the mounts that come from the factory, you don't need any special tools to install the Bestop on your Jeep. However, because Bestops are rather large and heavy, you'll probably need someone to help you mount yours.

Instructions:

1. Open your vehicle's front door, and flip down the sun visors.

2. Ask your assistant to help you raise the Bestop onto your vehicle. Then slide it into place together.

3. Push the Bestop's clamp brackets into the openings on your windshield, and tighten the clamps.

4. Put the mounting bolts of your Bestop through the top of your vehicle's body. Put the nuts on the bolts, and secure them with a screwdriver. You should have three bolts on each side of your vehicle.

5. Push your vehicle's connector that sits on the rear portion of your Jeep into the connection that sits on the top. This enables you to use the wiper on the rear window of your top.

Note: You can also install a Bestop on your vehicle with a simple screwdriver.

- Know the Anatomy of Jeep Tops -

Jeep tops are universally known accessories for jeeps. Almost anyone from the casual jeep owner to a hardcore off-road enthusiast would have some knowledge about them.

However, if you think that Jeep tops are but a simple item, you might have to think again because it can get pretty complicated. It would be quite hard to go wrong in buying a jeep top but having an intimate, and not just a basic knowledge about them can help you a lot in making a purchase. An extensive knowledge of different features of the best tops is also beneficial in the long run.

To begin with, asking the question, “which is the best Jeep top?” is essential in the decision-making process of choosing and eventually buying a Jeep top. Contrary to what you might think, selecting could be quite complicated. While all of its features are stated plainly, its pictures could give you the idea of what you can expect with it, and your environmental situation already dictates the specific one you need, there are many other factors that you must take into account when you are going to purchase.

You must make sure about intangible factors like its frame style and installation. These are but two of “not much known” aspects that need to be highly considered in jeep tops. Meanwhile, you need to experience firsthand the factors like its insulation or road noise.

Here are some of the most unaccounted for aspects in that must be considered well.

1. Aftermarket or Factory?
There are no huge differences between the things that aftermarket and factory jeep tops can offer. Factory Jeep tops gives you the genuine Jeep feel and overall appearance. It also offers additional security because of sticking to the true Jeep accessories that are of the same standard with the vehicle’s own quality.

Aftermarket Jeep tops has great similarities with those of factory units but there are some exceptions. The materials, quality and purposes of aftermarket tops are parallel with the factory version but certain benefits and features can be found in aftermarket units that are not available in factory ones.

Aftermarket tops are optimized for reduced road noise. Replacement units are also relevantly cheaper than the factory units. Choosing aftermarket is more favorable when replacing old factory Jeep tops.

2. What Jeep top category?

There are two obvious ways of categorizing Jeep tops. They are the Hardtops and Soft tops. Hardtops can be a never-fail choice since they rarely need replacements and provide heavy-duty and enhancement protection. Soft tops are built for drivers who love customized Jeep accessories. They are available with a large design variety, offering comfort, style and versatility that justify your Jeep purchase. Soft tops can also be easily installed, removed and stored.

However, they are not ideal on colder weathers because of their thinner fabric and material construction that result to poor insulation. They may last for about 3 – 5 years and the requires replacement.

There are many other things to consider like making a choice between Two-piece Hardtops or One-piece Hardtops if you settled on purchasing the Jeep Hardtops and the selections regarding pre-existing factory frame. You also need to think about having an Aftermarket frame or no frame Jeep top. Still when we go down to it, what really matters most is getting the style that you require at a really reasonable price. Best tops

Taking Care of Your Jeep Tops

Having a Jeep means that you have the appreciation for one of the oldest brands of off-road vehicles in the world. Driving a Jeep also means that you have a choice whether you drive it without a Jeep top on, whether soft top or hard top.

If your constant road companion is your Jeep, then you already know by now that there is a need to constantly change its top according to the different weather conditions that you would encounter on the road. As every season change, along with it the changes of temperature, so is the need to change the Jeep top of your vehicle.

During warm months, most Jeep owners prefer the use of Jeep soft tops. This is one of the types of Jeep tops that usually need maintenance and care to make sure that it keeps on being functional even after years of use. However, it is still necessary to replace it after several years of use. Still, you can do something to make sure that the life span of your Jeep soft top would be prolonged. What you need is the knowledge of the proper way to protect and clean it.

You need to clean your Jeep's soft top whenever you already notice an accumulation of dirt in its top surface or either of its vinyl windows. Make sure that you clear away by hand all pebbles or small stones and other sharp objects that were attached on your Jeep top to prevent it from tearing through the material. In washing dirty Jeep soft tops, using warm water is highly recommended. Dab just the right amount of mild liquid detergent or dishwasher on a soft terry cloth in washing off the dirt from its canvas top and vinyl windows. Then, before using it on another drive, make sure that you allow it first to dry off quickly.

Furthermore, make sure that you apply a cleaner or protector for Jeep soft top. One of the best protectors is Raggtopp Protectant. You can apply it on your top's cover and windows every month. This kind of protector will shield your vinyl windows from UV rays that may cause disintegration and yellowing and protect your soft top from strain. Any dealer of Jeep vehicles has these Jeep soft top protectant and they can be purchased online.

When it is time to remove your Jeep soft tops in order to replace it with another much more appropriate for bitter weather conditions, make sure to store it on a dry area. Cover its vinyl windows with a terry towel and roll it up so that the vinyl would not touch itself and prevent it from stretching. ### (Written by Kay Zetkin)
